Northern Leg -
Liturgy
Liturgy and prayer are an important part
of every leg on Student Cross. One of the great strengths of the
movement is that each leg has developed its own character and
attitude towards its prayer and worship.
On Northern Leg we share at least one liturgy together everyday.
These liturgies are organised and lead by a Liturgy team who between
them prepare all the liturgies before the week begins. Any walker
can join the liturgy team before the week. We have a liturgy
secretary (appointed at the leg AGM) who coordinates this group and
produces a liturgy booklet to be used during the week.
Because preparing and leading the different liturgies is a shared
responsibility our worship tends to be very diverse and varied. We
are just as likely to be chanting psalms as we are to be making
plasticine models. We see diversity of our liturgy as a strength to
be embraced and nourished by.
Our liturgies differ every year, There is no set format which
remains the same from year to year. What the liturgies involve will
change from year to year as the liturgy team evolves and differs.
New ideas and perspectives are always welcome.
At the regular stops we share each day we share together in
‘stations’. The idea of stations is based on the traditional liturgy
of stations which mark the events of Jesus’ walk to Golgotha. Our
stations, however, are a chance for different members of the leg to
share something personal from their own experiences or ideas. The
stations vary enormously from the deeply profound to the highly
amusing. Leading a station is not compulsory, but everyone is
encouraged to share a station at least once during the week.
During the week both the Anglican and Catholic eucharists are
celebrated either by a walking priest or by local clergy in the
parishes we visit.

Music
Northern Leg loves music and we just
can't get enough of it. In our liturgies we tend to have lots of
music, from the quiet and reflective through to rousing hymns, and
everything in between.
Most evening we visit a local pub, where we share songs and
instrumental pieces. There will usually be a mix of individual
pieces and group sing-a-longs. Everyone is encouraged to share their
talents (or lack of talent) with the rest of the leg. All styles and
traditions are very welcome, new pieces are especially welcome.
Note: If you play a large musical instrument please check with
the leader that there is space in the cars. |
